Marc Wölffer, who owns the popular Sagaponack, New York based Wölffer Estate Vineyards with his sister, Joey, exudes a global sensibility from his years spent in the international hospitality arena. In addition to stops at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and restaurants in Havana, Cuba, he owns wineries in Spain and Argentina. Here, the vintner shares his travel picks.
There are three that come to mind: The Market House in Tel Aviv, Israel, is a beautiful boutique property in a great area of one of the world’s most happening cities. It doesn’t get more grand than the Alvear Palace in Buenos Aires or Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize, an ecohotel surrounded by nature and a fascinating Central American culture.
There are so many places which I have not yet visited, so my bucket list is unending. A trip on the TransSiberian Railway from Moscow through Mongolia to Beijing is number one. I’d love to take my kids to Bowron Lake in British Columbia, Canada, and to Montana to go horseback riding.
I never leave home without my earplugs, camera, mosquito repellant, and a good sense of humor.
Go-to vacation spot?
I love traveling through Argentina because of its diverse landscapes and culture. I start with a night out in the bohemian Palermo district of Buenos Aires. The next day I visit the gorgeous Estancia Villa Maria, an old fashioned ranch in the countryside, for a great meal à la Asado barbecue, followed by horseback riding, polo, or a round of golf on the property’s beautiful new golf course. Then for two days I like to visit the Mendoza wine country with its breathtaking views of the Andes. The wineries there are some of the impressive ones in the world. Our very own Finca Wölffer Rosé comes from the region, where we own 20 acres within the Santa Maria de los Andes Vineyard.
I love Mexico and especially Mexican food. The service and the romantic atmosphere at Las Mañanitas in Cuernavaca, Morelos, definitely puts it on my list. In Munich, there’s Zum Goldenen Kalb, which serves a great steak. In Palma de Mallorca, I always go to Chiliss, a kind of fusion Tapas spot in the marina overlooking the island’s iconic La Seu cathedral.
Most inspiring travel memory?
Hiking in the mountains of Bhutan.
When I’m in The Hamptons I head to...
The kitchen, to cook for my family and friends and plan our next trip.
